Raku Pottery Raku is an ancient form of Japanese pottery, with black craze marks (cracks) and flashes of brilliant metallic colors. I use a western variation to create a similar effect. This makes each piece solely unique. After the bisque fire (the first fire) a glaze is applied and then using a make shift small outdoor kiln the pots are heated fast with a propane burner. After the glaze melts (viewing this through a hole in the lid) the pieces are removed using fire proof gloves and tongs. They are placed red hot into a barrel of saw dust and immediately ignite. Where ever the piece touches the saw dust or other flammable material, flashes of brilliant colors appear on the finished pot. I close up the lid of the barrel and after a few minutes of this reduction of oxygen I remove the piece and smother it in a tub of water. During this process the clay body is stressed and shocked from the moment the heat is turned off -- this creates those sought after craze marks which makes the pot appear ancient. FOR DECORATIVE USE ONLY. Raku pottery is not food safe and will not hold water. Please use a damp cloth to remove any dust and do not use harsh cleaners. It is for decorative use only.
