What do you hear?

When you sit very still, what do you hear?  Birds chirping; the wind blowing, someone whispering?  I hear laughter, a phrase of a song, or my own thoughts reciting a prayer - the world around me.  My world or environment finds a way of permanently embedding itself in my pottery, as I create.

The Process

I turn on a favorite CD.  Roll the clay between my hands, and with a little water, I begin molding a lump of clay into a vessel of centrifugal force.  When the piece is smoothly trimmed, I turn it over to allow it to speak.  Often I hear my very own thoughts and emotions emerging in my head - and sign my name.

What do you see?

As your eyes find my pottery and continue to search for an unspoken voice, try imagining what I may have been thinking.  If you are careful to detail, you may find a message written underneath the beauty which the pot coveys.

The Meaning

Every piece of pottery that is made from my hands, has it's own voice.  If it is not the pot itself, it is the phrase or word which is inscribed on the bottom.  I like to tell people who approach my work, "Find something that speaks to you."  May that be a mug that feels right or a plate which holds written truth - find it, touch it, love it - for this is why I create.
